In 2024, GiveLight found a long awaited opportunity to sponsor and educate orphans in Afghanistan.

Building Capacity in Kabul

GiveLight is pleased to have a partnership with the Rayan Children orphanage and school. This young organization had reached a funding plateau despite the space to serve more children and a waiting list of over 80 children. GiveLight’s support made it possible to immediately begin enrollment for 18 boys and girls.

Many Afghan children in Afghanistan are dually impacted by extreme poverty and the loss of parents. It is common for children to work, to supplement household income, and lose their chance at an education and a hopeful future.

Rayan Children’s team identifies orphaned children in the marketplace and works with the extended family to enroll the child in the home and school.

Boys live at the home full-time. Girls are transported daily for an extended school day. The school teaches academics and Islamic studies. Children play sports and have access to quality medical care. The home is registered with the government and has received high marks for its quality staff and organization.

It costs $95 per month per child to provide residential and medical care, transportation, and clothing with a full-time school program and summer activities.

Annual Iftar & Warm Hugs

For several years, GiveLight has worked with a California-based partner, Zara Initiative, to provide special iftars for more than 2,000 children at 5-6 homes in Herat.

We were also to distribute 200 jackets in the winter of 2023 and continue to look for viable options for long-term partnership throughout Afghanistan.
