Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world. Dian, founder of GiveLight Foundation, traveled to the region in 2008.
We completed our home in Cambodia and opened our doors to 50 children at the end of 2013. The home was built on donated land amidst two hectares of rubber plantations in the beautiful village of Kampong Champ, about a two hour drive from the capital, Phnom Penh.
As many of you may know, our long-term goal is to help uplift the lives of 10,000 children globally over the next few years. We are thrilled to announce a new partnership to uplift the lives of 50 orphans with special needs in Cairo, Egypt. This project became a reality after years of research and trying to find a credible partner on the ground.
Banda Aceh in Indonesia suffered catastrophic damage as a result of the tsunami that struck on the 26th of December in 2004. Nestled in Takengon, a beautiful lake resort town in Aceh, Indonesia is our very first GiveLight home. It was inaugurated on the first anniversary of the tsunami and has served as a sanctuary for forty children who lovingly called it "rumah indah" or "beautiful home". Today, we are proud to share that fifteen of our children have graduated from college, four have gotten married and they are giving back either by mentoring our younger children and/or contributing financially.
Our team of twelve, including our founder, Dian Alyan, traveled to Baja, Mexico to hand-deliver books to children at an orphanage. The following is a personal reflection from Dian about her trip:

Sri Lanka was also affected by the 2004 tsunami. As we started our projects in Indonesia, Pakistan and Bangladesh, we were approached by a family from Sri Lanka who shared our passion for serving orphans. The family donated the land and a partnership was formed with the shared philosophy of providing a secure and loving home for 50 children.
Happiness from Amman, Jordan! We are excited to announce the start of our work to support Syrian orphans through a partnership with a credible and trustworthy local NGO, Al Gharaa Foundation.
After seeing such atrocities committed to millions of innocent Syrian people and children, we made a decision to do something that will have a long-term impact. We began the launch for a school program to care for 100 Syrian orphans in Turkey in September 2016. We reached this goal by February 2017 thanks to the generosity of our wonderful friends. Since 2018, we have been sponsoring 120 children through an after-school center in Fatih area of Istanbul. We also sponsor a Hifz school on the Asian side by paying rent and teachers' salaries.
The Bay Area is one of the most affluent areas of our nation. One would think that there is no poverty, nor orphans, here. Unfortunately...
