Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am an Egyptian American Muslim who grew up in the US, but I go back to visit Egypt almost every year. I speak and read Arabic. I have also traveled around the world and have been to Indonesia (Bali, Lombok, Jakata). I am married with 3 children. I work as a nephrologist in the US.
How did you first find out about us?
I think I read about GiveLight in a newspaper article after the tsunami, and I was touched by what I read.
Why did you decide to support our work over an extended period of time?
Well, I saw the devastation, and I know Indonesia is not a wealthy country. So many people died and the ones who survived had almost no resources. Allah has blessed me, alhamdulillah, with some wealth and I see it as my duty to use it responsibly.
What are the important parameters for you in deciding which organization to trust?
I think organizations that start small, focus on one area, and keep it simple can be trusted. Also, organizations that primarily involve volunteers are usually trustworthy because they are more likely to be sincere.
Do you have a plan to visit any of our homes in the future? If so which one and why?
I would like to visit Aceh in the future, inshallah, but vacation time has been limited. I feel like I would need at least 10 days. I hope to make the trip in the next 2 years inshallah.
What are your wishes and advice for our children?
Get a good education in whatever field you enjoy and are good at. Do your best in your field of work. Don’t waste time on TV or entertainment because time is a precious commodity that you can never regain. Always look to Allah in your daily life and decisions. Have good character, a soft heart, and always give people the benefit of the doubt, because many times you do not know everything they are dealing with in their lives.
